As modern medicine consistently advances to new levels, many people are neglecting their health because they are in the mindset of “Well, I can just take a pill for that!”. Approaching your health holistically is a much better option! It is true that their is a pill for just about every problem, but are those medicines really good for you?
High blood pressure, for example, is usually treated by prescribing beta-blockers. However, high blood pressure is not caused by a beta-blocker deficiency! A more holistic approach that is much healthier overall is to fix the underlying problem. For most people, this is an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise! By picking up jogging 3 or 4 times a week, cutting out sodium and all the junk foods that are so bad for you, and replacing them when healthy, nutritious meals, you can give your body what it wants. Approaching your health holistically is always your best bet.
The three leading causes of death in the United States (and most of the other well developed parts of the world) are heart disease, stroke, and cancer. These three diseases together kill off the majority of the human race.
The problem with that – is that all three are largely preventable! Heart disease and stroke are mainly caused by a buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries. If you eat a nutritious diet, low in cholesterol, and high in good fats, you have gone a long way towards preserving your health. Combine that with vigorous exercise on a regular basis, and you’re much less likely to develop heart disease or suffer a stroke.
Regular diet and exercise has also been shown to go a long way towards preventing cancer! Many health foods such as soy and flax seeds (and flax seed oil) have properties that prevent the body from growing new blood vessels – the kind that tumors create when they grow in your body. Modern research has shown that these types of food can be helpful in preventing the growth of tumors and cancer in the human body.
Simple carbohydrates like refined grains (such as white bread, flour, and white rice) are broken down by the body into simple sugars in no time flat. Loading up on pasta is the same thing as spoon feeding yourself sugar. Sugar depletes your body of B vitamins, speeds the aging process, and leaves your body vulnerable to disease. Substituting these simple carbohydrates with whole grains like unprocessed wheat will give your body a fighting edge.
Eating a diet rich in antioxidants is important when approaching your health holistically. Antioxidants help your body reduce oxidative stress, and increase its ability to function properly.
Exercise is just as important (in fact, it may be MORE important) than a good diet! It’s never too late to begin an exercise routine, though if you feel it may be a problem, always consult your doctor first. Exercise keeps your body young, your muscles toned, and you will be ready to fight off disease and live a rewarding life.
Approaching your health holistically doesn’t have to be hard! Take these simple steps to be healthier, feel better, and live longer.
